Right after the Oscars, Silicon Valley opens its own tribute to film with the Cinequest Film Festival. The festival will feature memorable films, special guests & events and innovations. Q&A sessions and forums will be held with 700+ artists attending the 22nd annual festival in San Jose.
Exclusive to the Cinequest Film Festival is the Maverick Spirit Award and Emerging Maverick Award which will be presented to emerging artists. Cinequest will also be celebrating the Day of Empowering Voice on Friday, March 2 from 10am to 5pm at the San Jose Repertory Theatre. Prominent leaders from Silicon Valley and Hollywood will be present to discuss the convergence of technology, social media, and art.
Opening night at Cinequest is Tuesday, February 28 at the California Theatre in San Jose. Luc Besson’s Fifth Element, The Professional) “The Lady” starring Michelle Yeoh “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) and David Thewlis “Harry Potter”) will be screened at 7pm. The film is a political romantic drama following the life of Burmese activist Aung San Suu Kyi who in recent years was released from 20 years of house arrest and allowed to run for political office. After the film, guests are invited to join the Opening Night Party at Hyatt Place in San Jose for cocktails, food and music. Tickets to the screening are $20, with party attendance, $50.
If you want to maximize your film festival experience, there are three passes you can buy to attend multiple events. With a VIP all access pass for $500, you can attend virtually everything and have to the Intel VIP Lounge Access. With a Mavericks pass, you’ll be able to attend most screenings, opening/closing night and all Maverick Spirit Events. If you’re merely interested in the films, you can get a Film Lover Pass for $145. Otherwise, all screenings are $10.
Cinequest runs from February 28 to March 11, so you’ll definitely need to book a Sillicon Valley suite for the night if you plan to attend more than one event. Get ready for two weeks of film, innovation of technology!
