Moffett Field was formerly a United States Navy facility and a naval air station. In addition to this, NASA also houses and operates several of their own aircrafts at Moffett. The field includes Hangars 1, 2, and 3. Hangar one is actually one of the largest freestanding structures in the world, covering a total of 8 acres. During the early 1930s, the city of Sunnyvale sold the land to the U.S. government and Moffett Field was soon created. Since then the field has played varied roles based off of the needs at the time. For many years, the field would be the starting point for maritime reconnaissance, fleet support and various trainings being held. When you visit the Moffett Field Museum, you can go on a self guided tour of the various exhibits located throughout the museum.

 

You can learn about the various time periods that Moffett Field was used and the important role that the field played. For example, did you know that during the Cold War, Moffett Field was the headquarters for the Patrol Wings Pacific and home to various squadrons and the West Coast’s P-3 Training Command. You can also learn about the early history, the field’s namesake Rear Admiral William Moffett, the Army Air Corps, the WWI era, the USS Macon, the Fighter Attack Era, Navigation systems, NASA and entire area dedicated to the uniforms real soldiers wore.
